What is a CASA?

The CASA program is central to fulfilling society’s most fundamental obligation by making sure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect and to learn and grow in the safe embrace of a loving family. In Georgia, approximately 7,485 children at any one time are entangled in the foster care system because they are victims of abuse or neglect. Society has a fundamental obligation to ensure the basic rights and needs of every child are met. CASA volunteers are a formidable force that fight for these rights. There is no one else like a CASA volunteer who brings a sense of urgency to a child’s needs both in and out of the courtroom.

Court Appointed Special Advocate Programs provide an innovative, cost-effective approach to a very urgent crisis. Community-based programs recruit, screen, train, and supervise CASA volunteers to provide individualized attention for these innocent victims and an independent source of information for the judge who must decide their future.

What does a CASA do?

CASA volunteers serve as the eyes and ears of the court. They gather information from anyone who may be able to shed light on the child's situation. The CASA volunteer attends court proceedings and makes an independent recommendation to the judge about what is in the child's best interests -- bringing a sense of urgency to the child's needs. As a community partner in the child welfare system, a CASA volunteer increases a deprived child's access to services, promotes safety, and advocates for timeliness and permanency for children involved in juvenile court proceedings. The CASA volunteer remains involved until the case is permanently resolved to keep the focus on the child.

Georgia Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc. develops and supports court-sanctioned, community-based affiliate programs that provide trained and supervised volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children involved in juvenile court deprivation proceedings.

Each abused or neglected child involved in juvenile court proceedings shall have a safe and permanent home.
